Safety tips from the Captain's Team

As we approach the warmer weather, please consider the following before you head out on the water:

- always take sufficient water with you to hydrate during your row. (It is preferable you use a soft plastic bottle to reduce damage to the hulls of our boats from the hard metal containers.) ๐Ÿ’ฆ
- wear a hat or visor ๐Ÿค
- apply a good 50+ waterproof sunscreen and reapply when at regattas or when training for long periods of time.  Make sure you apply to arms, legs and face!๐Ÿงด
- wear a lightweight long-sleeved UV protective top๐Ÿ™†‍โ™‚๏ธ
- wear sunglasses if able ๐Ÿ˜Ž
- assess the weather conditions, if temperatures are extreme do not train in the heat! ๐Ÿฅต

Your safety is important to us. You may not see or feel the affects of the sun now, but over time, it can be detrimental in the long-term.

Open Day wrap up:

Six quads raced off for Open Day Club Races, run as three heats and a final. The rowers spanned the whole club, young & old, including 4 beginners from the recent school holiday Learn to Row program. We even had our President Luke successfully steer a crew through the heats.

Competition was tight – there were no big margins in any race. The winning crew in the final was only one length in front of 2ndand 3rd, who were almost dead level with each other as they crossed the finish line.

Crew : Will Drew Finn (bow), Karen Fitzpatrick (2), Millie Delaney (3), Hugh Brady (str), Elliot Stevenson (cox)

It was great to also have Moonee Valley Councillor Rose Iser attend on the day to be part of the celebrations.

JL2R School Holiday program wrap up:

Last Friday was the last day of a very popular and well-run Junior Learn to Row School Holiday program, run by coaches Ben Delaney, Glenn Bottrell and Barry Gardner. A big shout out to Greg Bird also for driving the 'safety tinnie' each day of the program, and to the junior boys and girls squad members who came along to offer their support and to cox.

A total of 10 girls and boys, aged between 13 and 16 years old, took part in the 2 week program, which ran as follows:

  • Day 1: Orientation and getting to know the club; an introduction to rowing equipment; safety procedures; basic technique on rowing machines.
  • Day 2 onwards: Crews were on the water rotating through a mix of boats with the opportunity for participants to try sculling, sweep rowing and coxing.

Some of the participants also took part in our Open Day activities last Sunday, with quite a few of the youngsters expressing an interest in joining the club.

The School Holiday program has also raised some much needed revenue for the club.

October TND & Wine Tasting:

Another great Thursday Night Dinner was held earlier this month, with lots of members attending and taking part in the wine tasting. A big shout out to head chef Alex Hamilton and the other members of the Senior Boys squad who planned the menu and spent many hours preparing the dinner for the night.

We are currently collecting all the votes for the wine tasting and will let you know shortly which wines will be included in our range.

Congratulations also to Gemma Williamson who was the lucky winner of the Best Meats meat tray raffle.

Next months TND will be held on Thursday, 6th November, to be hosted by the Senior Girls Squad - menu details to follow.

Historic clock presentation:

An historic clock was donated back to ERC at our Saltwater Regatta. ERC gave it as a race trophy to Mr. H. West in 1887, some seven years after ERC was formed. It has remained in Mr. West’s family for three generations. The plaque says it is the “Vice President Trophies”, but we know no more than that : not the event nor who the other crew members might have been.

With the recent passing of Mr. West’s grandson, his daughter has carried out her father’s wishes and returned the clock to us.  We thank Corio Bay rowers Kate Fragiotta  and Christine McGlade (nee Barnett, ex-ERC) for connecting the daughter to us.  The clock is now on display in our trophy cabinet.

  Essendon Canoe Club

Just an early warning that Essendon Canoe Club will be holding Centenary Celebrations next Saturday 18th October. As part of their celebrations, they will be holding on-water activities from 12noon until 3:30pm along the river from Fairbairn Park  to the Raleigh Road Bridge (Anglers Tavern). We will send a reminder of the need to keep clear of the area closer to the time.

  Member profile - Claire Ravenhall:

Q: How long have you been a rower?
A: I have been a rower for a little over 1 year

Q: What is your favourite regatta?
A: I've only been in 2 regattas so far, but I thoroughly enjoyed the SWC the best. This was not only due to fabulous time I had on the day, but was also due to the amazing experience I had in the lead up to the event, bonding with and training with my crew, and the great coaching we received.

Q: What is your most memorable rowing experience?
A: Like in the previous question, the most memorable rowing experience I have had was in experiencing the improvements in our technique and fitness and beating our PBs during the 10 weeks leading up to and including our SWC row.

Q: Do you have any rowing ambitions for the future?
A: I haven't got specific goals at this stage, but I'd love to keep doing more and more training and competitions as I get older. Rowing is a great way to get to know people, and I'd love to see more of the world through rowing.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: In my spare time, I like to hang out with my family and catch up with friends. I also love reading a great book, curled up with a cat or 3.
