  • introduction to the rowing technique.

AV Technicians working at our club tomorrow:

Please be aware that there will be workers at our club tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 February, installing the new audio visual system in our upstairs function room.

The workers should not affect any rowing or club activities.

State Champs / Thursday Night dinner:

Save the Date for our State Champs / Thursday Night dinner, to be held on Thursday, 26 February. We are delighted to announce that Hannah Every-Hall will be our guest speaker for the night. Hannah is a national rowing champion, World Champion and Olympian.

The Master's squad will be hosting and will be "Carbing it up for States" with spaghetti bolognaise and desserts on the menu. There will also be a vegetarian option for those who need it.

To help cover costs, the Committee have increased the price of Thursday Night dinners to $15 per person (up from $10 pp).

We hope to see as many people there as possible to support our athletes who will be competing at the State Championships at Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, from Friday 27 February to Sunday 1 March.

Volunteers needed for sausage sizzle:
  volunteers - Rotary duck race

In conjunction with The Great Essendon Rotary Duck Race, which is to be held on our stretch of the river from 9am - 11.30am on Sunday 1 March, ERC will be setting up another Sausage Sizzle fundraiser to take advantage of the crowds attending the duck race to help raise funds for our athletes competing at Nationals at Lake Barrington, Tasmania in March.

Our athletes will be away at State Champs that weekend, so we are looking for volunteers to help set up and run the sausage sizzle from around 9.30am to 2pm. The ERC bar will also be open during this time.

The Duck Race will start setting up from 9am, with the race itself to run from 10am-11.30am, therefore please note, it will not be possible to row downstream from the ERC landing during this time.

If you are available and would like to help at the sausage sizzle, please email or call Judy secretary@essrc.com 0419301206

Tickets to "buy a duck" for the race can be purchased for $12 each through Trybooking

  sausage sizzle

The senior mens and senior ladies squads did a awesome job last weekend, raising funds for their Nationals campaign, with the first (of 2) sausage sizzles run from the front of our club.

Thank you to all ERC members and parents who supported them by buying a sausage or a drink.

Argonauts to row out of ERC:
  Argos

With the closure of roads in the Albert Park Lake area for the Australian Grand Prix, the Argonauts Rowing Club will be parking a trailer at ERC for a 4-6 week period from around 23 February, with some of their members rowing out of our club at various times during this period.

They will be issued with a fob and will be shown how to use the alarm system to enable them to have access to our facilities during their visit times.

Please make them feel welcome if you do see them at the club.

Ballarat regatta wrap up:

Racing at the JG King Wendouree Ballarat regatta on the weekend of 31 January -1 February in what could be best described as 'difficult conditions' on the Sunday and near perfect on the Saturday, ERC rowers and coxswains performed with excellence.

Our senior lightweights, and school grade rowers raced on Saturday, and grade and masters raced on the Sunday. Strong head winds and white caps made tough going! Going through those waves gave coswains and bows an experience to remember.

Greasy oil slick at our landing:
  oil slick

Rowers will most likely have noticed a very greasy oil slick that comes out of the stormwater drain near our landing on a regular basis, and that gets all over our boats and clothes.

We were advised to report this to the EPA, who say they can only trace the source if they come to investigate while it is happening.

If members do see the oil slick, could you please ring (03) 96952777, quoting reference no. PRI00122347 (they answer pretty quickly and are very helpful). You don't have to wait around for their officer to come, just report it, as even if they are not able to come on that occasion, at least we will have logged it as yet another occurence.

Photos of any further occurences can be sent to the Secretary.

Captain' Team Safety Tip:
  coffee machine

This safety tip is about looking after your fellow members' health and well being when using the club coffee machine.

Too many times the rapid rinse has not been performed after using the machine to make a coffee with milk. This allows milk to dry and solidify in the milk tube causing contamination for the next user.

Please ensure you flush the tube after the last coffee has been made in your group. It is very easy following the instructions on the machine as per below and it only takes 30 seconds:
  1. Take the tube out of the milk and insert the nozzle into the drip tray hole on the back right hand corner on the tray.
  2. Press ok to start rapid rinse
  3. Press ok again and the machine will rinse the tube and coffee nozzle.
  4. Leave the tube in the tray so the next person can see the rinse has been performed.
If the drip tray needs emptying to avoid it becoming scummy, just slide it out of the machine, carefully remove the glass splashback from the tray and place aside safely, empty the used coffee grounds into the bin and rinse the tray in the sink. Put it back together and now the machine is all clean for the next user! You will need to click "emptied" on the machine screen.

If the deep clean message appears, just click "later" until a committee member flushes the machine with the detergent solution. It could also be performed just using water and following the instructions on the machine however, this does take about 15 minutes to perform.

Treat your new coffee machine station as if it was your own at home and look after it so everyone can enjoy fresh and healthy barista style coffee!

Q: How long have you been a rower?
A: I started rowing in Year 8 (back in 2012😅) and rowed right through to 2018. Then I ‘retired’ for a hot minute, did some school coaching instead and enjoyed my sleep ins for a few years. Fast forward to last season – I came back ‘just socially’ with Zara, which lasted a hot minute.. caught the bug again and now we’re back to training 10 times a week like nothing ever happened.

Q: What made you want to join our club?

A: I grew up in Essendon so it was my local club, but had some friends who were part of the club and roped Zara and I here and the rest is history! But the people of ERC are what makes it so special for sure!

Q: What is your favourite regatta?

A: Nationals, without a doubt! The atmosphere is electric and I love racing crews you’ve never come up against before and not really knowing where you stand until you’re racing, plus seeing everyone’s work from the whole season pay off. Getting to see your rowing idols racing is awesome too!

Q: What is your most memorable rowing experience?

A: One sunrise morning back in 2016, I was out in a double and under the red bridge a dolphin jumped out of the water next to us in the boat, just casually. Barry was riding on the bank and somehow missed the whole thing! I went to school afterwards and no one believed me. Sounds fake but swear it happened!

Q: Do you have any rowing ambitions for the future?

A: My big goals this year are to hopefully make the Vic Lightweight Quad with some of the ERC gals and come home with my first nationals medal which would be awesome! Potentially trial for the Aus Lighty Alliance 8+ which races in Boston later in the year too😊

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: During the day I work, as the Head of Marketing at CorePlus, which is a Pilates and yoga franchise. Outside of that, I love heading to the beach, travelling, or camping somewhere, a cheeky wine or a bit of running and cycling! In my break from rowing ticked off a few marathons – including in Vancouver, which was a very cool experience!

Q: What is your favourite time to be on the water?

A: Morning sunrise sessions, for sure!

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have been given and who was it from?

A: Not every session will be perfect, but you can think of a goal as the 30/30/30 rule: 30% will feel amazing, 30% will be just okay, and 30% are sessions where just showing up is a win. But that’s the point–if it’s challenging you, it’s at the right level! Often it’s the sessions that feel not so good that teach you the most in the long run.
