About the Essendon Rowing Club

We aim to provide a fun way for ERC members and their partners, guests and children (13 years of age and over) to exercise and build friendships through what is one of the world’s best water sports - rowing.

ERC is open 7 days a week with rowing often happening both in the mornings and in the evenings. Squads can be found training in the gym or on the water weekdays anywhere from 6am to 8am or from 4.30pm to 8.00pm. A training session will usually last for a maximum of 1.5hrs depending on the level of the crew and the numbers of rowers. For the weekends when we are not attending competition regattas then training is usually Sat mornings anywhere from 6am to 12pm and Sunday mornings from 8am to 12pm.

The clubhouse is situated at 48 The Boulevard, Moonee Ponds, 3039  (Corner of Holmes Rd & The Boulevard). The Captains' Team consisting of the Club Captain assisted by two Vice-Captains are in charge of all the rowing activities at the club. You may apply to the Captains' Team ( Email essrccaptain@gmail.com ) for allocation of boats and oars for the sessions of your choice. There is usually a member of the Captains' Team at the clubhouse during most training times. See the Contacts Tab for the names of our Captains' Team.

Information about the club activities can be found from a variety of locations. There is a club notice board located at the back wall of the boat shed on the mezzanine landing of the rear stairway. This board will have information on up-coming regattas, regatta entry details, and competition results.

Also another notice board is located on the back wall of the boatshed at the left-hand side of the doorway. This board is for you to report any serious incident or damage to the club's property that needs urgent attention. Also at the same location is the incident book in which you must record the details of any incident or damage that occurs or even near misses so that we can all learn from it. This is an integral part of the perpetual maintenance program undertaken by the Boat Manager and our volunteer maintenance members.

And a Rowing Log Book is also located at this same position next to the door through the back wall of the boatshed. In this book you are required to enter details of your proposed rowing session before hitting the water and update them when you have finished rowing. This record provides one of the checks to determine who is still out on the water at any given time. See Safety Rules section for further information.

Another notice board will be found in the lounge area of the clubrooms showing matters of interest, notices of social events etc.

The various ERC rowing squads are currently designed to try to efficiently cover all types of members such as Junior (<19yrs) & Senior (>19yrs) Beginner Squads for learning to row, a Development Squad for those over 19yrs rowers wanting a step up from beginner training or who formerly rowed and now want refresher training, Male & Female Junior Squads for U19yrs rowers from novice to highly advanced, Male & Female Senior Squads for rowers over 19yrs and who have at least a basic grasp of rowing technique from novice up to highly advanced competitive abilities. In addition we have the Masters Squad for both men and women aged from at least 27yrs but normally above 35yrs up to no maximum age limit!

A significant means of communication within each squad is the ERC facebook page for which all ERC members can send a friend request to join and they can then be allocated to the "group" which corresponds to the squad that best meets their needs and this allows them to "meet" fellow squad members via facebook posts and messages and to organize training sessions or social rows if they prefer. The ERC coaches also utilise facebook for communicating with their squads and individual rowers to both plan and arrange their training sessions.

Finally any rower who needs further information or a little help in getting started and "learning the ropes" can speak to either the Club Captain or either of the two Vice Captains who will only be too willing to help out.
